Can Kittens Drink Milk? | PetMDPet Care Tips, Reviews > Stories of Our AnimalsCan Cats & Kittens Do you have Soy Milk? What if you do? April 19, 2018 By Hey Pet Parents & Pet Lovers,Something many new pet parents don't know if they shouldn't give them milk from cat cows as it can cause them a stomach discomfort, so... what kind of milk is safe for them to have? Well, of course, there's all kinds of pet-safe milk like, , , , and . Is there any kind of human grade milk that cats can have? Can cats drink milk Soy/Soya? The answer is unfortunately not. Cats cannot and should not have human-grade soy milk. Why? I thought cats weren't able to drink cow milk because of lactose, I'm not lactose! Well, the thing is, although I'm not lactose inside, it has other components that can alter the stomach of your little one. Soy milk has "antinutritional factors" that are components that are quite difficult for a cat to digest. Unfortunately, if you give soy milk to a kitten, like cow's milk, it could give them diarrhea or other gastrointestinal problems. Now this, like many other things, depends on the kind of soy milk that I give them. There is a lot of safe milk for pets that do not contain these "antinutritional factors" and do not contain additional sugars, but it will be extremely difficult to find them in human grade soy milk. What are the ingredients you should be careful about? Like lactose, they're the milk sugars. For soy, in particular, they are called Stachyose and Raffinose. Now, these are usually digested in the intestine, but the enzymes of the cat have problems breaking them down and can cause them to vomit, or again... have digestive problems. I'm Milk doesn't have the nutrients a cat needs to survive anyway... Many times what people don't realize is that cats don't actually benefit from much milk. Although yes, it's a great way to put liquids in your little one, it doesn't actually have nutritional value for them. Being mandatory carnivores, cats get most of their meat nutrients. Unless you're feeding your kitten some cat-specific milk, you won't find these nutrients. Is there any other problem with feeding my cat soy milk? Well, because of the sugars and calories they count, it can also lead to obesity or tooth rottenness. For example, a cup of soy milk may contain about 100 calories, while an average cat only needs about 200 calories a day. So if you are negotiating calories that need empty calories, your cat may be on the way to malnutrition. Long-term soy milk consumption in cats has also been related to liver failure and thyroid problems, so please make sure you don't make it habit of feeding your kitten this delicious drink. A less severe side effect is actually swelling, which can cause a lot of discomfort to your kitten. Although not so serious, it may be very uncomfortable for your cat, and you will want to avoid as much as possible. Well... I just give my cat a little milk like a gift! Okay, okay... I'm listening. I'll be honest, I've let Walker and Beau drink very diluted milk in the past, too. The important difference is that it's diluted! If you're giving your kitten the last lameritas of your cereal or watering milk for a lot (1-milk to 10-water), you're probably in the clear. Just make sure you take care of kittens with , because it will definitely not help your situation. I would still recommend this as a very rare gift and still suggest getting some safe cat alternatives. Because cats have a more sensitive digestive tract, you have to be more careful not to make things habit so they don't become a problem later. My cat(s) has been drinking milk all his life, and they haven't had any problems! Well, you're lucky! Your kittens/kitties are one/some of the few who can break lactose! Now, note, this is pretty weird, and your future kittens may not have the same luck, so try to be safe and monitor your cats. Also note: not all side effects are as clear as vomiting or diarrhea. One of the most common is swelling, which again causes a little discomfort for your little one. So if your cat looks swollen, you might want to rethink this gift, because it can be the beginning of a not so happy journey. Recipes for homemade kitten formula30 Mar for homemade kitten formula The pet store is closed, and you have hungry kittens that need formula. Never be afraid! Here are some kitten formula recipes you can make using ingredients available in most grocery stores. It is not unusual for kittens to have some difficulties digesting formulas based on cow's milk. The first formula of our list, which is based on goat milk, can be used instead of milk replacement formulas purchased in the store (such as KMR, Breeders' Edge or Just Born) until weaning. We do not recommend using the other formulas for feeding long-term bottles, but they can be useful if you need to feed your kittens and you cannot find the ingredients for homemade goat milk. Cornell's Book of Cats says that the human baby's formula can be used if it is composed to duplicate the normal force, although the human baby formula is usually not nutritious enough for kittens. Homemade formula #11 quart whole goat milk 1 teaspoon of light of Karo syrup 1 tablespoon of fatless yogurt (the preferred goat milk) 1 egg yolk Gelatin deflavored Knox: Put goat milk in the saucepan, add jelly in the previous amount depending on the age of the kitten. Heat the milk/gelatin mixture of goat until the jelly is dissolved. Remove from heat. Mix the remaining ingredients and refrigerate. It'll stay up to a week. Heat until the formula is almost hot, check the temperature and then try some drops of milk on the wrist first. It should feel a bit hot or even cool, not too hot or hot. It is not recommended to use a microwave. Once you pass the skin temperature test, you are ready to feed kittens. Homemade formula 2 (for emergencies)8 ounces of homogenized whole milk 2 egg yolks 1 teaspoon salad oil 1 drop of liquid pediatric vitamins (optional) Mix well and warm before use. Keep cooling. Emergency formula #3 (for emergencies)1 part boiled water to 5 parts evaporated milk 1/2 teaspoon of bone food by 16 oz liquid mix well and hot before use. Keep cooling. Emergency formula #4 (for emergencies)1 milk can be evaporated 1 egg yolk 2 tablespoons Karo jarabe 1 drop of liquid pediatric vitamins (optional) Mix the three wells and are stored in hermetic jar in the fridge. At the time of feeding mix 1/2 of the estimated amount of food with an equal amount of boiling water. (Once a day, mix 1 drop of human child liquid vitamins in each kitten formula.) Always try the temperature on the wrist before feeding. The combined temperature of boiling water and the cooled formula should be almost correct. If constipation occurs: add 1 drop of vegetable oil to each kitten formula not more than once a day until the problem was relieved. Read Kitten Care Handbook: . You can make the world a better place!
